Reading Recommendations from the Pastor

John Piper points out that if you are a slow reader (250 words/minute) and you read 20 minutes a day, six days a week you will read the equivalent of 15 books a year.  (from his book, Brothers, We Are Not Professionals, page 66-67)

Need a good place to buy books! If you cannot find these books in your local Christian book store you can order them on-line from Cumberland Valley Bible & Book Service located at This is an excellent resource for book purchases.

The Attributes of God by A.W. Pink. It certainly is true that A.W. Pink cannot be read "quickly". But rich treasures are often mined slowly. A Husband After God's Own Heart and A Wife After God's Own Heart by Jim George and Elizabeth George. The marriage relationship is one of the most critical places where our faith is seen as either real or artificial. Jim & Elizabeth George explore that relationship from their own role in the relationship and before God.  Published by Harvest.

Shepherding A Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp. Parenting is an awesome responsibility. But it is not new! Tedd Tripp seeks to help Christian parents deal with the amazing privilege of nurturing their children in Christ. This is a tremendous resource for those serious about their child's spiritual development. Published by Shepherds Press.

The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. Charles Spurgeon gave this book to his future wife as his first present to her. He read it over 100 times and laced his sermons with illustrations from this book. Why? Because it so vividly portrays the journey of the Christian life. It really is a "must read" for the growing Christian.

The Godly Man's Picture by Thomas Watson. What does a godly man look like? Oddly enough it hasn't changed in 400 years (or ever). Read a "dead guy" and find out how relevant truth is in all generations. Published by Banner of Truth.
